Who we help · SMEs

Funding for SMEs, handled.

SMEs sit in the sweet spot of German and EU innovation funding, with the widest range of programmes and the highest rates. We combine them into one funded plan.

What's different for smes

The funding reality for smes

As an SME you qualify for more than any other company type. The German innovation system is built around the Mittelstand.

Highest rate

Up to 42%

The SME bonus lifts the Research Allowance to 35%, and the 2026 overhead flat rate takes it to an effective 42% of wage costs.

Widest range

Most programmes open to you

From the Research Allowance and ZIM to KMU-innovativ, WIPANO and EU instruments, almost everything is in reach.

Stack it

Two or three at once

A tax credit plus a project grant plus an EU grant is a normal SME combination.

Regional bonus

Where you sit matters

Programmes like GRW add support for investment in structurally weaker regions.

Programme by programme

What each programme means for you

Every fit at a glance, with the angle that is specific to your stage. Germany first, then Europe.

* Indicative figures. The actual amount depends on company size, eligible costs and the programmes you qualify for.

What we fund

It comes down to technical uncertainty

The test is technical uncertainty: systematic development and testing under genuine unknowns qualifies, routine work does not. What that looks like in your field is on the Industries pages. See your industry

FAQ

SME funding, answered

Broadly, under 250 staff and either under EUR 50M turnover or EUR 43M balance sheet, including linked companies. We check your status, since it drives the bonus.

Yes. The Research Allowance is a tax credit and ZIM is a grant; they follow different cost logic and stack, within the usual cumulation rules.

For new projects from 2026, the SME rate plus the overhead flat rate reaches an effective 42% of wage costs. Earlier years are up to 35%.

Yes, GRW and regional bonuses can add to the stack.

Retroactive to 2022, at each year's applicable rate.

The stack

How SMEs combine two or three at once

The allowance is the base under everything; layer a project grant and protection on top.

Always

Research Allowance

All R&D, up to 42%, the base under everything. Retroactive to 2022.

Per project

ZIM / KMU-innovativ

A grant per project, with region, young-firm and international bonuses up to 60%.

Protect + invest

WIPANO + GRW / BAFA EEW

Patents, regional investment and efficiency, on top of the R&D funding.

The leap

Eurostars / EIC

International R&D, or a deep-tech grant plus equity through the EIC.

Good to know

The angles SMEs leave on the table

A few SME-specific levers that push the rate higher, and the mistakes that quietly cost funding.

Specific to SMEs

  • The 42% rate needs AGVO-SME status and not being a firm "in difficulty".
  • ZIM bonuses stack: region, young firm, international, up to 60%.
  • Mid-cap reach: up to 500–1,000 staff in cooperation projects.
  • Linked companies share one ceiling, reallocable across the group.
  • ZIM and the allowance run in parallel, on different cost positions.

What gets missed

  • Too narrow an R&D definition for the allowance.
  • ZIM and the allowance colliding on the same costs.
  • Overlooking ZIM's region / young / international bonuses.
  • Missing the fixed KMU-innovativ cut-offs (15 Apr / 15 Oct).
  • Not confirming SME status, which drives the 35–42% rate.
